N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone is a chemical compound with an excellent solvency and high boiling point for a wide range of organic and inorganic chemical compounds. Moreover, N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone has high chemical and thermal stability, making it ideal for use in engineering polymers and coating resins application. N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone is also used as paint and cleaning agent (stripping solvent) due to its low surface tension. Furthermore, it can be used in the synthesis and formulation of various paints and coatings, polymers, and electronic products.
Wire wrappers, agrochemicals, and petrochemical are some of the other applications of N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone. The demand for N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is increasing rapidly due to the implementation of stringent regulations on fossil fuel-based vehicles. Moreover, the demand for N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is expected to increase with the increasing sales of electric vehicles. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), sales of electric cars topped 2.1 million globally in 2019, surpassing 2018, to boost the stock to 7.2 million electric cars.
The United States-based automaker, Ford Motor plans to invest US$ 11 billion in electric vehicles by 2022 and have 40 hybrid and fully electric vehicles in its model lineup. Electrodes of li-ion batteries are mainly produced by mixing a conductive material, active lithium-ion, along with N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone and polyvinylidene fluoride. Moreover, in the electronics sector, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is used as a solvent in the manufacturing of polyurethane coatings, epoxy, polyimide/polyamide wire enamels, and flexible polyimide copper clad board.
Photoresists are used in the production of micro electromechanical systems, magnetic recording heads, flat panel liquid crystal displays, printed circuit boards, printing plates, and integrated circuit devices, such as computer memory chips and microprocessors. Other applications of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, in the electronics sector, include removing excess rumble at the time of production of various electronic parts. However, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is banned in Europe, the European Commission has added N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone to REACH Annex XVII, the restricted substances list.
