Softgel capsules is the generic term given to the medicinal dosage forms in which the solid gel is enclosed in a rigid shell. A softgel capsule is normally an open-top oral dosage form for medication in the form of an extended liquid tablet. They usually consist of a clear gelatin shell with a clear liquid interior fill. The majority of softgels contain some filler and some other ingredients such as starch powder, mucilage powder, dried milk powder, starch, hydrocortisone, calcium chloride and vitamin B6. Softgels are available in tablet, capsule and powder forms and can be taken once daily as needed.
Softgel capsule are medications that contain a gel-like substance enclosed within a gelatin shell. They work by blocking or allowing some drugs to be absorbed into the bloodstream, thus protecting the body from adverse reactions.
A capsule consists of an internal gelatin shell containing a liquid interior fill. They usually consist of water, a polymer emulsion such as silicone elastomer, and an acrylamide Gum. Softgels have different types and strengths of shells, ranging from Low Dose (ID) to High Dose (HD). The type of shell chosen will depend upon the dosage level you wish to administer. The High Dose capsule is used for very high doses; the Low Dose capsule is used for medium dosages and the Softgel Capsule has a standard thickness to which it will shrink before it breaks down completely.
Softgels capsules have a number of advantages over hard capsules. Softgels are easier to swallow, do not cause indigestion or other intestinal problems, and can dissolve without causing any harm to the body. They also contain an active ingredient such as gelsterol, which is used for stomach lining protection. Soft gel capsules have a longer shelf life than hard capsules and many have been freeze-dried so that they retain their medicinal properties. It is important to ensure that the manufacturer specified the correct dosage of the product, especially if you suffer from any special needs.
