Bone sonometer refers to any ultrasound instrument that measures the mechanical properties of bone. Bone sonometer is an ultrasound transducer that operates in the x-y-plane regime. Bone sonographers are required to provide diagnostic guidance to the dental surgeon for the purpose of bone healing. Bone sonometers function on the principle of sound transference between the ear and the ultrasound transducers.
Basically, the purpose of using bone sonographers or diagnostic equipment is to provide quantitative ultrasound signals that are used to diagnose and treat several medical conditions including osteoporosis, kidney stones, fractures and other related disorders. Osteoporosis is mostly caused by the loss of calcium that results due to the loss of bone mass. This is a progressive disease in which the bones thicken at an early age. The diagnostic agreement between a bone sonographer and a physician can help determine whether the patient actually requires treatment or not. For instance, in August 2020, a group of researchers from the University of Wurzburg, Germany, reported that over-activity of resorbing cells in bone can cause osteoporosis, which affects millions in the country.
The bone sonogram is made up of two major sections, namely the probe and the receiver. A variety of techniques can be used in the fabrication of this specialized device. Generally, the device is fabricated with the help of special controls guidance document that is called as the Bone Mapping Device or BMD. With the help of bone sonometer, the mechanical properties of the body parts are measured and the position of each body part is determined. In general, the main mechanism of a bone sonometer is based on ultrasound transmission.
There are some other devices that are categorized under bone probe models that include ultrasound vesicle method, laser Doppler, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound clumping method. A bone sonometer is one such category that comes under the guidance of bone segmentation and density measurement.
