Trawl ropes and nets are nets used for fishing in salt water. They are usually built on boats but are also found on barges and other sea vessels. Trawl Nets were originally created to catch prawns and other seafood species. They work by drawing in the fish or shrimp to the net, then lowering it into the water to be kept alive while it is retrieved. Most trawl nets are made differently depending on if the target species is shrimp or fish.
Some trawl nets have a large ramp at the front of the vessel to place and retrieve the nets, and others have a long metal cable, known as a rake, attached to the front of the nets to allow the nets to spread further than their overall length. Saltwater trawling nets also vary in design, depending on the fish being caught. Many trawl nets have a mesh size of 9mm or larger. These smaller sized nets tend to be less effective in catching bigger fish and can sometimes result in a loss of fish. Most modern trawl nets have smaller mesh sizes, ranging between a few millimeters to two millimeters.
Trawl ropes and nets are also used in marine research and are often referred to as pelagic trawling or fish trawling. The name has a reference to the fact that the nets are set up and retrieved from two boats. One boat is positioned in the water column, usually at the bottom of the body of water. The other boat is equipped with a special deep-diving apparatus that allows it to locate fish suspended at the top of the water column. Trawl nets can be used to trawl through different depths of the water column while being controlled by either an electric motor or a series of booms and ladders.
