LBS in the Healthcare Sector Gains Traction As Healthcare Organizations Adopt Automation

A location-based service (LBS) is an umbrella term denoting various computer-based software services that use geographic information and metadata from a given location to deliver information or services to end users. LBS can be used in various contexts, including healthcare, indoor analytics, mobile device management, content analysis, real-time processing, enterprise resource planning, e-commerce, etc. The key advantages of LBS are: they facilitate the access, coordination, and sharing of data at different levels of the supply chain. They reduce operational costs by improving logistics and deployment of human resources at various levels. They improve the quality of service delivery by enabling better decision making based on real-time information.

LBS in the healthcare sector is gaining traction as healthcare organizations are finding ways to make doctors and patients happier through automation. Use of LBS in the healthcare sector offer the ability to respond to emergencies much more quickly than traditional methods of response, which has led to launch of new products. In May 2021, Gozio Health, a provider of customizable end-to-end mobile platform, partnered with CriticalArc, a provider of security and emergency management solution, add CriticalArc’s SafeZone to Gozio’s location-based services platform to enable hospitals and health systems to enhance security and safety.

LBS in the healthcare sector do have certain limitations. First, location-based services cannot represent the exact position of a device or individual. For instance, if a person is walking in the mall and sees a product advertised on another table, the person will not be able to pinpoint the location of the ad on the table. Similarly, mobile phones that use technologies such as GPS cannot place precise locations. In addition, location-based services are subject to privacy issues and concerns as they can readily access private information about consumers, even those who have signed a non-disclosure agreement.
