Demand for Bone Glue to Surge with Increasing Prevalence of Various Orthopedic Disorders

Bone glue has been in use for decades and is commonly used in fractures and also other injuries to the bones. Bone glues are of two types – synthetic and natural bone glues. Synthetic bone glues are cyanoacrylate, methacrylate , polyurethane foams, bisphenol-A glycidyl dimethacrylate, epoxy resins and zinc polycarboxylate. The principle behind this is that the glue will help to keep the bone together. Once applied, the doctor who is performing the procedure can then remove it and place it on the wound to help mend the broken bone. It is a very effective technique for fracture repair, as the process will help keep the bone together and prevent it from moving around once it is broken down.

The process of using bone glue is quite simple. First of all, the physician will numb the area to be treated so that there are no feelings when the glue is applied. Then a new bone filler is used to patch up the broken bone. Usually a small piece of tissue is used but this can depend on the particular procedure. After the piece of tissue is used, a piece of the bone adhesive is placed over the tissue piece and is gently pressed into the broken bone.

The reason that this is a great technique for fracture repair is because it is a completely painless process. It will take just a few seconds for the surgeon to apply the bone adhesive and the patient will not feel anything at all. The only time the patient may feel a bit sore is if it is too tight or if he or she tries to tear the dressing before it is completely dried.

Increasing prevalence of various orthopedic disorders such as osteoporotic spine, osteoporotic knee joint, degenerative cartilage disorders, and vertebral compression fractures is expected boost demand for bone glue. According to the study ‘Osteoarthritis in Europe: Impact on health status, work productivity and use of pharmacotherapies in five European countries’ that examined the impact of peripheral joint osteoarthritis across five European countries, UK (43.6%), France, (25.6%), Germany, (15.2%), Spain, (8.4%), and Italy (7.1%) recorded high prevalence of peripheral joint osteoarthritis, with majority of cases aging 55-74 years.
