Regulators Warn Against Buying Inaccurate Infrared Thermometers That Fail to Meet Legal Requirements

An infrared thermometer is a non-contact thermometer that uses infrared rays to read a specific object's thermal radiation without any physical contact being made. This is extremely useful when working with sick patients or when measuring the exact temperature of delicate electronic or mechanical equipment. These special types of thermometers can be found in many different places, including hospitals and electronics stores.

Emergence of Covid-19 has skyrocketed the demand for infrared thermometers. In Germany, from 3 January 2020 to 5:54pm CEST, 27 July 2021, there have been 3,758,401 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 91,565 deaths, reported to WHO. As of 17 July 2021, a total of 88,400,469 vaccine doses have been administered. Such scenario has led to launch of new infrared thermometers. In July 2021, iGear, a brand for gadgets and smartphone accessories in India, launched ‘Thermo Check,’ a fully automatic contactless unmanned infrared thermometer that can be mounted on a wall or a tripod at the entrance of housing societies, offices, malls, schools, and many such areas.

There are several benefits to using an infrared thermometer compared to other types of measuring devices. First of all, there is no direct contact which means no potential for spread of infection or overheating. Another great feature of these thermometers is that they can be used to determine the temperature at several different locations without having to place the device near a source of heat such as a bulb.

Recently, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, reported a rise in the number of unreliable infrared thermometers available in the U.K, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The medicines regulator has warned people against buying inaccurate infrared thermometers that do not meet legal requirements.
