Bottled water is drinking water packaged in plastic or glass bottles. It is considered a healthy alternative to packaged beverages than any other soft drink. In recent years, consumer interest in bottled water has been related to their convenience, safety, health, and its value. It is available in the carbonated form that contains dissolved carbon dioxide gas. Moreover, bottled water is considered as a consumer food product by the United States Food and Drug Administration. FDA categorizes bottled water into well water, artesian water, sparkling water, mineral water, purified water, and spring water.
Over the years, the demand for bottled water has increased owing to the shortage of drinking water and the contamination of various water bodies, as well as due to its advantages. In 2018, worldwide, Mexico and Thailand had the highest per capita consumption of bottled water, with 72.4 gallons of bottled water per person. While, in 2019, Germany had the second highest per capita consumption of bottled water, with 168 liters of bottled consumed per person However, bottled water is not always safer than tap water. Tap water is monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency, whereas the USFDA monitors water bottling activities.
Moreover, minerals need to be added to bottled water. According to the new FSSAI guidelines, packaged water companies must add 10 mg of magnesium and 20 mg of calcium per liter in all such products. Bottled water is simply defined as sealed in plastic bottles and designed for personal consumption, no cooking, and no refrigeration. Ionized bottled water is safe, clean, tastes great, and has all the right certificates. Furthermore, it is marketed as convenient, better tasting than tap water, and a healthier, pure alternative to sugar-sweetened drinks. Bottled water has become a popular alternative to tap water due to its taste and health benefits.
