Sodium metal is widely used as a base to make sodium chloride salts. In the US it is most commonly used to make saltpans for road salt. It is also used in many Birch cutting fluids and many other industries. The main advantage of Sodium Metal is that corrosion is not a problem; therefore there is no need for expensive coatings like aluminum or magnesium.
The main disadvantage of the compound is that it is insoluble in alkaline conditions. This means that before using it for anything it needs to be mixed with an alkali metal ion such as sodium or potassium. For instance, if you are making a cement mixture that contains potassium hydroxide it would be impossible without mixing a large amount of sodium metal. It tends to dissolve slowly in alkaline conditions and requires additional additives to achieve the best possible result. It has the ability to interlimate with various oxides of metallic salts and form new salt structures, called salt bridges. This reaction generates new products with different compositions than the parent metal.
